Hemodialysis International

(modified from an editorial by Dr. Chris Blagg in the 2009:1 issue)

Dr. Zbylut Twardowski established the journal in 1997 as an annual publication called Home Hemodialysis International. The first issue published the Proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Daily Home Hemodialysis that had been held in conjunction with Annual Conference on Peritoneal Dialysis in Denver, CO.

The next changes came in 2000 in San Francisco when the journal was renamed  Hemodialysis International, not forgetting its home hemodialysis roots, but broadening its scope.  At that same San Francisco meeting, the International Society for Hemodialysis (ISHD) was founded, with Dr. Todd Ing as first president and Dr. Zbylut Twardowski as secretary.

In 2002 the ISHD acquired the ownership of Hemodialysis International. The journal began to publish quarterly issues in 2003.

Dr. Allen Nissenson took over as editor in 2004, and he built on the successes of Dr Twardowski, expanding the Editors and Editorial Board to represent the international scope of the ISHD and to widen the range of expertise available to help the journal. As of 2005, the journal was being indexed in Medline.

Dr. Chris Blagg took over editorship of the journal in October 2008, and further expanded its scope and impact. Dr. Blagg retired in June of 2015 and since July of 2015, Hemodialysis International is being edited by Dr. John Daugirdas.
